The drive from the funerals of both his drunkard father and beloved sister was long and boring. Sam didn't want to be in Texas anymore, as the place brought bad memories. He told the cabby to take him far far away, somewhere up north without too much population.
And that was exactly what the taxi driver did. He drove them north, stopping only for necessary things like sleeping, eating, and bathrooming. He drove past several small towns, but Sam never said a word. They just past Forks and were in the process of driving through a creepy forest.
Something about the forest looked tempting. There were bound to be numerous deadly animals who could easily provide an end to his suffering. "Stop." Sam informed the driver of his intent to exit the vehicle.
The taxi pulled to the side of the road.
Sam got out of the car and grabbed his backpack, unzipping it. "How much do I owe you?"
"What?" The cabby raised an eyebrow in surprise. "Here? I thought you were gonna take a piss behind a tree or something--not get dropped off. We're in the middle of nowhere. Tell you what, there was a nice town called Forks we passed about an hour ago. How bout I take you back there? No extra charge."
"No. This'll do." Sam was content with this drop-off location. He would not be persuaded otherwise. "How much do I owe you?"
The cabby was uncomfortable just leaving a passenger out in the middle of the forest. But, he had already tried to convince the boy to go to a more appropriate location. There wasn't much more he could do. If the fool boy wanted to be left off here, then so be it. He did some quick calculations for the hundred or so mile trip and rounded his fee to an even thousand. "How bout $1,000?"
"Fair enough." Sam took ten $100 bills from his backpack and handed it to the cabby.
The cabby took the money and drove away.
Sam zipped up his black backpack, then wore it behind his back. He went to do some exploring in the forest.
